The main reason I create this blog is to write reviews about
every single thing that happens in Surabaya underground scene. This so called “City
of Heroes” attracts me way much better, not only to stay here permanently but
it is more about to explore and find out what most people and friends that I
know or I haven’t known have attempted to make a significant change especially
for Surabaya underground scene. Discussing about underground scene, it is
certainly hard if we put aside the bands.
This following band that I would like to review called
Reveur. Funny thing that happened before I wrote this review was, one of the
members told me not to compare or equalize his band with Saosin or another typical
Post Hardcore bands. I was like, “Dude, when I write a review, I absolutely
will ignore any intervention which is pointed to change, edit, or convert the
content, substance, and context of my writing, and you should know that. But I will
politely ask a permission first before I publish my article just in case I
identify some parts of my article may sound offensive or inappropriate based on
my careful consideration!” After receiving some almost complete profile (fiuh!)
I finally can write my review about this band.
This band, Reveur, is the new project of my good
friend, Putu Hendra Wijaya a.k.a Hendra a.k.a Putu, a bachelor of economy who
has a deep passion to explore his musical talent and formerly sang for a metal band Vendetta, where Fraud's Kecenk used to play drums. I haven’t got any complete
information except this band was formed in Surabaya on late 2013 by Eri, Wendi, Hendra and
Ardo who were influenced by Loma Prieta, Suis La Lune, Charles Bronson, and other hc
punk bands. Luckily, Hendra sent me this following link, https://soundcloud.com/nerverecs to
help me writing this review.
I was little bit upset because I only found one single track on
their soundcloud account. But, I was so glad to find out that their sound was
pretty impressive. This soon going to be an EP was started by the one and only track entitled, “Rise and Bloom”. The track was opened by
beautiful riffs with “sad and lonely” sort of ambience which really reminded me
of Billy Talent, but it suddenly changed when Hendra’s voice came out to scream
“Push it!!!” (if I’m not mistaken, since Hendra didn’t send me the lyrics) accompanying the guitar riffs harmoniously, altogether with fast drums tempo and soft bass
sound, until on 0:56, the tempo became slower and finally, the song ended up on 1:44. It was
almost hard for me not to describe Reveur as another raw version of Loma Prieta but having Underoath's Spencer Chamberlain on the vocal section, considering Putu's screaming voice was almost similar.
Overall, Reveur actually fulfilled most of my general expectations of what they sound like, and I was glad that Hendra told me that they would have their EP as soon as possible. But I am now so curious about when this band will record their next song, because honestly, it is almost difficult to identify the band's main musical preference with only one track. I hope that my cynical words can be understood as a positive curiosity to find out where exactly Reveur is going to be, otherwise, I can't avoid my impatient carelessness to point out them as another band who just wants to have a good time and say, "I've got my demo!".
Honestly, I'm happy that these guys on Reveur are still excited to play this kind of hardcore sound, considering that (on my personal perspective) such sound is sometimes still not familiar for some people who claim that they listen to hardcore.Other thing that makes me happy is, Reveur plays that kind of raw oriented hardcore sound, if I can say that way. On my perspective, I can feel their soulfulness behind so many limitation they might have during the process of producing their music. And it is good to have this kind of band who still carries the hardcore spirit when most of other bands tend to seriously record their song with more advance and modern sound to be nicely listenable and enjoyable. But I must say, "Thumbs up, Hendra. Good job!".
